Case Study: Karoo Bioscience Project EPC: Dorman Projects

Karoo Bioscience Project EPC: Dorman Projects

Introduction: The Karoo Bioscience Project is a research facility located in the remote Karoo region of South Africa. The facility required a reliable and efficient energy solution to power their operations and reduce their dependence on grid-supplied electricity.

Challenge: The facility required a large amount of energy to run their equipment and needed a solution that would provide a reliable source of power while also reducing their dependence on grid-supplied electricity.

Solution: Solar MD was selected to provide the energy storage and management systems for the project. The system included 400kWp of PV modules, 3 x 110kW and 1 x 50kW Sungrow PV inverters, and a 630kW Sungrow PCS bidirectional inverter working in off-grid mode and frequency shifting the PV inverter. The energy storage component of the system was provided by Solar MD's 1.5MWh Lithium-Ion battery storage. The system was controlled by Solar MD's EMSAi with Logger V2, which provided real-time monitoring and control of the energy flows.

Results: The Dorman Projects system was able to provide the Karoo Bioscience Project with a reliable and efficient energy solution. The PV array and battery storage provided the facility with enough energy to run their equipment, and the grid connection allowed them to sell excess energy back to the grid. The off-grid mode and frequency shifting of the PV inverter allowed for maximum utilization of the generated energy and minimized the dependence on grid-supplied electricity.

The Solar MD Lithium-Ion battery storage also ensured that energy could be stored and used during power outages, providing additional security and reliability. The system also provided significant cost savings for the facility by reducing their reliance on grid-supplied electricity. The EMSAi with Logger V2 provided real-time monitoring and control of the energy flows, ensuring that the system was operating at optimal efficiency.

Conclusion: The Karoo Bioscience Project required a reliable and efficient energy solution to power their operations, and Dorman Projects was able to provide that. The PV array and battery storage provided a reliable source of power, and the off-grid mode and frequency shifting of the PV inverter minimized the dependence on grid-supplied electricity. The system also provided significant cost savings and ensured a secure and reliable source of power for the facility.
